If you've been to the Philippines, you probably remember seeing manongs in their wooden carts selling Baby Green Mangoes , with bagoong and siling labuyo on the side.

 

These Baby Green Mangoes aka “Manggang Hilaw” from Mexico were picked underdeveloped, giving them a more sour taste and crunchy texture. It is high in Vitamin C and low in sugar. 

 

Since theye are more sour than sweet, Baby Green Mangoes are usually eaten in the afternoon during merienda time. Street vendors would line up in front of school gates and near offices to offer these delicious sour treats to students and workers. Selling them on a stick makes it easier for customers to eat them without making a mess.

 

How to Best Enjoy

1. Wash your Baby Green Mangoes well under cold water.

2. Optional: Remove the skin carefully with a peeler.

3. Add bagoong (shrimp paste) and chopped siling labuyo (thai chili). Enjoy!
