In the Edo period (1603-1868), people did not have baths at home, so public bathhouses were built to meet the need. At first they were steam baths, then large bathtubs were developed. Since people were unclothed and mingled without regard to age, sex or rank, everyone was equal in the bathhouse. A popular item for these bathhouse visitors was a fragrant lotion made with distilled flower essences using a device called a Ranbiki. Oedo-Koh is a range of incense sticks made in Japan by Nippon Kodo. It was inspired by the culture and ambience of the ancient city of Edo (now Tokyo). The warm, flowery scent of pine is best suited for relaxation - whether meditating, doing yoga, after a bath or during a wellness treatment.

Only wealthy people and the nobility used to use the scent of incense. Even among ordinary people, who may not have had access to real scented woods, the fascination for these woods was great and they are often depicted in works of Kabuki and Joruri theatre.
